Before we go any further with this series, you should know who's behind it. Dr Parul Sharma Sobti has been practising since 2009 and has completed more than 500 smile designs. She reviews every post here.

Where it began

Dr Parul did her Bachelor of Dental Surgery at SR Dental College, affiliated to Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak. She's a registered dental surgeon and a member of the Indian Dental Association. Over the years since 2009 her work has moved more and more towards cosmetic dentistry, and today she practises as a Digital Smile Designer at Dr Sobti's Dental Care in Rajouri Garden, New Delhi.

Why smiles

Ask her and she'll tell you the teeth are the smaller part of it. She thinks of the person who has covered their mouth in every photo for years, or the bride-to-be worried about one dark tooth before the wedding, or the parent who just wants their child's first visit to the dentist to go well. Her own line for it is simple: your natural beauty begins with a confident smile. When people stop hiding their smile, you can see it in how they talk and laugh.

How she works

She listens first. Every plan begins with what you'd like to change and, just as important, what you'd like to keep. It's the thing patients mention most in their reviews: that she gives them time and really listens to the problem. Another wrote that she makes sure you're comfortable throughout the treatment, and that goes for children as well.

She won't start cosmetic work on an unhealthy mouth. Gum problems and decay get treated first. After that she prefers the gentlest option that will do the job, so whitening, bonding or reshaping come before veneers or crowns wherever they can give the result.

And she shows you before she does anything permanent. With digital smile design you see the planned smile on screen, and often as a trial version in your own mouth, so you can say yes or ask for changes first.

Working with Dr Pushkar Sobti

Dr Parul runs the clinic together with Dr Pushkar Sobti, an implantologist with 18 years of experience and more than 5,000 implants placed, who focuses on digital implantology and full-mouth rehabilitation. It means one patient can have their smile designed, missing teeth replaced with guided implants and the final teeth made to match, all in the same clinic and all planned from the same 3D scans.

In the next post we'll take a smile apart, layer by layer, and see what every design has to think about.
